Despite receiving such strong booking ever since he moved to the WWE main roster in 2022, Gunther could find himself off the WrestleMania 42 card.
Gunther last appeared on WWE TV on the March 2 episode of Monday Night Raw where he ripped off Dragon Lee's mask on his way to defeating the luchador. BodySlam has reported that Gunther's feud with Dragon Lee was designed to set up a programme between Der Ring General and Rey Mysterio which would lead to a match at WrestleMania 42.
Those plans changed, however, due to Rey Mysterio's rib injury which he suffered before the Royal Rumble. BodySlam has noted it is currently unknown if Gunther will perform at WrestleMania unless Mysterio is medically cleared in time for the Showcase of the Immortals.
Rey Mysterio confirmed this week on Unlikely with Adrian Hernandez that he suffered fractured ribs during his match with Austin Theory on the January 26 episode of Raw. It was known that Mysterio was injured at the time as he was not involved in the post-match beatdown from The Vision and the referee threw up the 'X' to signal a legitimate injury. Mysterio went on to compete in the Royal Rumble a few days later, but he was only in the match for 2 minutes 43 seconds after entering at #4.
Should Gunther not perform at WrestleMania, it may raise questions about the competency of WWE's creative team, especially as the two-time World Heavyweight Champion has been booked so strongly as the Career Killer over the past several months, retiring Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles.
