Infamous TNA Match To Be Revived At IMPACT Rebellion 2023
IMPACT Rebellion 2023 set to feature the return of an infamous TNA gimmick match
We are several days away from IMPACT’s second PPV event of the year, with Rebellion airing live from Toronto on April 16.
The build to the event has been marred by injury, with the likes of Josh Alexander and Mickie James afflicted heading into the show. As a result, it seems that IMPACT are pulling out all the stops, and have revealed that the infamous Last Rites Match is set to return, with PCO and Eddie Edwards set to do battle in the gimmick bout.
Edwards and PCO have been feuding since the tail end of 2022, after the dissolution of Honor No More. Edwards originally buried PCO in the desert in November 2022, but the monstrous former Ring of Honor World Champion came back to IMPACT at Hard To Kill seeking revenge on Eddie.
A take on the casket match, the first and so far only Last Rites Match in IMPACT history came at TNA Destination X 2007, with Sting defeating Abyss. Like a regular casket match, the object of the bout is to put your opponent into a casket and shut the lid. Unlike a regular casket match, the casket is called down to the centre of the ring from the rafters, and is raised to the ceiling by wires at the end of the match.
The original is hailed as one of the worst matches in TNA history, with fans memorably chanting ‘FIRE RUSSO’ throughout the bout, despite the match reportedly being a Dutch Mantell idea. It’s unknown at this moment in time if the gimmick will be tweaked for PCO vs. Edwards or if it’ll be complete in full candelabra and gravestone adorned glory.
