Jake Roberts: Bret Hart Got What He Deserved In Montreal
Jake Roberts believes Bret Hart was selfish and got what he deserved at the 1997 Survivor Series
While discussing the career of noted rival 'Ravishing' Rick Rude during the latest edition of the DDP Snake Pit podcast, Jake Roberts took shots at Bret Hart and claimed that The Hitman got what he 'deserved' at the 1997 Survivor Series.
Bret was famously 'screwed' out of the WWE Title on that night in Montreal, after originally believing his match with Shawn Michaels would end in a disqualification. It was then verbally agreed between Bret and Vince McMahon that he would vacate the title the next night and say goodbye to the fans before leaving for WCW.
The Snake was discussing Rude jumping to WWE while still reigning as one-half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions when he addressed the so-called Montreal Screwjob.
"I don't agree with that [leaving as champion] at all. You know, there's been so many guys who get away with it too. Holding up promoters because they don't want to lose the title in a certain area. Maybe Canada, has that ever happened? Oh wait, it did. Shawn and Bret. He didn't want to drop it in Canada, so they [Vince McMahon and others] screwed him.
"You didn't get screwed assh*le! You got what you deserved. How do you have the right, not to drop that title? That title, that was given to you. You did not beat up anybody to get that. The reason you have that title is because some other schmuck was a good enough guy to lose to you [The Undertaker at Summerslam 1997.] So you not dropping that title tells me you don't give a flying f*ck about anybody else but yourself, and that's very selfish. It's wrong and if you are contemplating doing it, that's for you".
Roberts has previously been critical of both Hart and Michaels, referring to them as two of the 'worst' WWE Champions of all-time, while positing that Bret should have never been pushed higher than the mid-card.
