Day one of Wrestling Dontaku was headlined by Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Jay White for the NEVER Openweight Championship and after a long battle, The Switchblade left the Fukuoka Convention Center with the gold.

Both men battled back and forth for 39 minutes and White managed to pick up the win after he reversed a Full Nelson into a Bladerunner. Tanahashi will feel aggrieved, though, as he made White tap out to the Cloverleaf down the closing stretch but Gedo distracted Red Shoes Uno to keep the match alive for the Bullet Club man.

With the loss, Tanahashi's reign as NEVER Openweight Champion comes to an end after 93 days. He defeated Shingo Takagi for the belt back at New Beginning in Nagoya and he successfully defended the title on one occasion against Great-O-Khan at Castle Attack.

Elsewhere at Wrestling Dontaku, Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Tanga Loa to earn an IWGP Tag Team Title shot for Dangerous Tekkers. Taichi also vanquished Tama Tonga in the Iron Finger From Hell Ladder Match to reclaim his mentor Takashi Iizuka's favourite weapon.
