Jelly Roll was allegedly aware of the backlash around his involvement in the Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton programme at WrestleMania 42 and the rapper actually pushed to be involved in a more comedic storyline at WWE's biggest weekend of the year.
That is according to Bootleg Kev, a friend of Jelly Roll's who addressed WrestleMania 42 while interviewing AEW's Swerve Strickland.
"I'm really close to Jelly Roll. He was very self-aware that he was being pushed into a storyline that he probably didn't need to be pushed into. He was pushing - he was being very vocal about wanting to be involved in a storyline that is still playing out currently that was more comedic. He was like, 'Guys, if you put me into this thing, I promise you it's going to cook. It's going to f*ck.' I was there at SmackDown in Phoenix and I heard him having these convos with certain people at WWE. They still decided to - and look, if you're him, you're like, 'Hey man, if you're going to push me into the main event of WrestleMania, I'm not going to say no.' But, I don't think people are going to [like it]," Bootleg Kev stated.
Jelly Roll became a part of the Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton storyline during the build to WrestleMania 42 as he questioned why Orton turned heel, with Jelly Roll then getting into a confrontation with Pat McAfee following the former WWE commentator's own insertion into the programme.
Original plans reportedly called for Randy Orton to win the Undisputed WWE Title at WrestleMania ahead of Cody Rhodes & Jelly Roll vs. Randy Orton & Pat McAfee at Backlash. Jelly Roll and Pat McAfee were reportedly very aware of the backlash to their involvement in the storyline, however, and McAfee opted out, with WWE then changing the plans and booking Cody to retain at WrestleMania.
In addition to his own action figure and merchandise being featured over WrestleMania 42 weekend, Jelly Roll was involved in the main event of night one as he put Pat McAfee through the announce table with an elbow drop before Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton got underway.
Which comedic storyline Jelly Roll was more interested in is unknown, but there was speculation ahead of Backlash about the singer teaming with Danhausen against The Miz and Kit Wilson at the pay-per-view. Danhausen ultimately teamed with Minihausen (El Torito) instead.
