A planned pro wrestling return for disgraced indy star Joey Ryan has been cancelled following significant fan backlash.
Ryan has been away from the business since 2020 after being implicated as part of the #SpeakingOut movement, with the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla co-founder accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Ryan was announced for a return at the Portland Wrestling: Reborn event on August 23, but has subsequently been pulled from the show.
The announcement of Ryan’s involvement drew widespread criticism, and the promotion announced on their official Facebook page that Ryan will no longer be on the show: “I have canceled Joey Ryan’s flight. He will not be appearing at the August 23rd show.”
Tickets for the show are still available despite the risk that the show might be cancelled outright, with Prestige Wrestling running a counter-show on the same day, with Portland Wrestling revealing that Prestige have threatened to blackball anyone involved with the Portland Wrestling show:
“Prestige Wrestling’s promoter threatened to black ball every wrestler, trainer, and ring crew member who works with me, causing multiple wrestlers to drop out of the show and even the guy I was renting the ring from canceled the rental.”
