John Cena appears to have contradicted WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque's comments about what led to the company bringing back Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2025.

Brock Lesnar, despite being named in Janel Grant's ongoing sex trafficking lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE, made his return to WWE TV in the closing moments of SummerSlam to take out John Cena with an F5. Lesnar had been gone from WWE since SummerSlam 2023, with an early 2024 return being scrapped following the filing of Grant's lawsuit.

Triple H suggested following SummerSlam that WWE brought back Brock Lesnar as he was on "John Cena's wish list." Cena, however, noted to Adam Glyn of Adam's Apple that he simply faces whoever WWE books him against.

"I've been saying the same thing for 25 years: They deal 'em, I play 'em. I'm just really excited. We've got like 12 of these things left. I think SummerSlam was an indication from the audience where everybody kind of knows we're closing our book. And just because I close my book in December, that doesn't mean the WWE closes its books. They've got to continue their programming going forward. So, they're just trying to make the most exciting shows for the fans and for the dozen of them I got left, they deal 'em, I play 'em," Cena said.

WWE Legal cleared Brock Lesnar to return in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam and Brock's comeback was reportedly a factor in the scrapping of John Cena's heel run and the nixing of WWE's post-show press conferences.
