Additional details regarding Brock Lesnar's WWE status have emerged following his shock return at the end of SummerSlam 2025 (night two).
Lesnar made his first WWE appearance in two years during the show-closing angle at SummerSlam, hitting John Cena with an F5 after Cody Rhodes had defeated Cena to reclaim the WWE Title.
Details of the Cena/Cody match were kept quiet from producers, writers and production crew members, while Lesnar was flown into New Jersey on a private jet in order to kept his return a surprise.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke in-depth about the 48-year-old's return, noting that it played a part in the decision to turn Cena from a heel back to a babyface.
"They dropped it because it sucked, but also because a John Cena/Brock Lesnar programme, which is what they're doing, works better with Brock as a heel", Meltzer said.
Paul 'Triple H' Levesque seemed to suggest that part of the reason Brock was brought back was because he was on Cena's wish list for his retirement tour.
As far as how Lesnar was able to make his return, Meltzer noted that he had been cleared to do so by WWE's legal department a month ago.
Though he is not named as a defendant in Janel Grant's lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion is implicated in it, where it was alleged that McMahon used Grant as a sexual pawn during contract negotiations with Lesnar.
Meltzer suggested that WWE legal clearing Brock may be because Grant's lawsuit is about to be settled, either through a direct settlement or by the case going to arbitration:
"Four weeks ago, WWE legal cleared him. As far as why? I don't know. And that's something to speculate on…legal knows, either they're confident that things are going to arbitration and Lesnar's not a factor at that point, or they're close to a settlement and then at that point Lesnar's not a factor, or somebody there just had a change of mind. I don't know which one of those it is".
Meltzer also claimed that the reason WWE opted to cancel post-show press conferences during SummerSlam weekend was due to questions that may have been asked by members of the media about Lesnar's return and status with the company.
"I can tell you also, factually, that the reason they didn't do the press conference is because of this angle", he said.
As an aside, Meltzer also claimed that WWE have paid Lesnar the entire time he has been away and that getting a return on their investment may have played a part in the decision to use him again.
