Kenny Omega Reveals Why He Returned To NJPW And Not AEW
Kenny Omega has opened up about his NJPW comeback

After nearly a year out of action due to suffering from diverticulitis, Kenny Omega recently returned to the professional wrestling world, though in a surprise, it wasn’t with home promotion AEW. Instead, Kenny Omega showed up at NJPW’s Power Struggle event, teasing matches at both Wrestle Kingdom and Wrestle Dynasty in January. Signs point towards Omega doing battle with reigning Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd, in addition to teaming with Hiroshi Tanahashi to take on The Young Bucks.
Speaking with Fightful, Omega revealed the reason as to why he chose to return to NJPW rather than AEW, stating that he feels as if he owes NJPW for the success he’s enjoyed in his career.
“I owe New Japan a gigantic thank you (for giving him his big career break) and I do feel there’s a debt I have to repay in some way, shape, form or fashion. If by performing at the Tokyo Dome, making my comeback at the Tokyo Dome, it’s a way to help repay that and help do something for their business, then I’m more than happy to do that.”
Omega went on to explain that he doesn’t believe AEW is in need of him right now.
“When there’s an opportunity again and a chance, sure. I’d love to be back if you guys can have me, but right now, I think AEW has a good thing going and I don’t think they need me. So, I will make my return for New Japan instead…for now.”
Omega last wrestled in December of 2023, taking on Ethan Page in a singles match.
