Kevin Owens revealed on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown that a recent neck injury was set to rule him out of WrestleMania 41 and require him to undergo surgery.
Owens would follow up his SmackDown appearance with an interview on My Mom’s Basement to answer more questions about his injury, revealing some further details. The former Universal Champion revealed that the injury happened in a match in January.
“I am telling you—it happened in a regular match. No hardcore things, nothing. There were two very simple things that I’ve done a million times. I felt great. But then in January, I had a match and in the match, two things happened that really jarred my neck. That’s when the issues started… I didn’t land on my head, I didn’t get hurt—nothing felt wrong at the time.”
Owens noted that he’d had a full body MRI in December that showed he had no major issues outside of general wear and tear given his many years in the ring. He went on to reveal some of his unhappiness at the fact that his injury was leaked prior to his SmackDown appearance, taking away his very personal moment.
“Yeah, it really annoys me. Actually, I woke up to seeing that it was already leaked, and it really upsets me, especially because I know that whoever leaked it is some office employee that shouldn’t know this sh*t in the first place, and I told people like, this is gonna leak. They’re like, No, no, we’re keeping it tight knit. But then yesterday, obviously some departments had to find out for some reasons. And now someone who shouldn’t know this stuff found out, and it went where it shouldn’t, and now they took away my right to tell people because now everybody knows already, so I know.”
Owens gave no timetable on his return to the ring, but said that he does expect to come back at some point in the future.
