Mariah May Joined AEW Because Of Toni Storm Storyline Pitch

Tony Khan pitched a storyline with Toni Storm to entice Mariah May into signing with AEW

Mariah May was one of AEW’s most notable women’s division signings in 2023, joining the promotion in November last year and going on a swift rise up the card. She aligned with “Timeless” Toni Storm after being a fan, before the pair steadily got closer and closer in terms of a relationship. Less than a year into her run she won the Owen Hart Cup tournament and earned an AEW Women’s World Championship shot at AEW All In 2024 in Wembley Stadium.

When speaking on Busted Open Radio, May explained that it was this storyline that made her sign with AEW, as Tony Khan had pitched the idea before pen was even put to paper.

“Growing up as a wrestling fan, I was always attracted to the big storylines. You don’t really remember the matches, you just remember the moments, so I’ve always been really big on that. The reason that I chose AEW was because Tony Khan came to me with this story, so it was like, ‘Okay, I’m not just being signed to a company because she’s got a bit of momentum or anything like that.’ It was like, we have a real plan for you, and it was something to sink my teeth into, and I’ve got to work really closely with RJ City, who’s such a talented writer, on this whole character and this whole story, and then when it came to the video package, I feel like they have ideas for me, and then it’s great because I can contribute my own thing and make it feel more me, but I do stab people in the head with shoes on a regular basis, so it was pretty easy to pull into.”

May’s match with Storm will be taking place next Sunday on August 25 at AEW All In. It was recently revealed by Tony Khan that RJ City had a big hand in the building of their feud
