New Captain Insano Trademark Hints At Paul Wight's AEW Return
AEW have trademarked a term for a potential Paul Wight comeback
Jan 26, 2025
Paul Wight’s time in AEW saw him mostly confined to the commentary desk, sporadically competing between the ropes, wrestling seven matches in total since his 2021 arrival (including dark matches and the Jericho Cruise).
In 2021, AEW filed a trademark for Captain Insano, a character played by Wight in the Adam Sandler film Waterboy in 1998. It was filed under purposes for video games and digital media, so there was no chance of a Captain Insano match in AEW at the time. He donned the gimmick during an Acclaimed music video, but that was the most fans saw of the character. AEW have once again filed to trademark the term, though this time it suggests that Wight may be returning to the ring.
AEW have filed the term for use in a wrestling performance capacity, meaning that the door is open for Wight to compete as Captain Insano. Given that AEW are actively trademarking this term for wrestling purposes, there is likely an assumption that Wight will be back in an AEW ring at some point down the line. In November last year, Wight appeared at the CMA Awards as Captain Insano.
