The first major pro wrestling show of Saturday, April 6 emanated from Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan as New Japan Pro-Wrestling presented the 2024 edition of Sakura Genesis.
Los Ingobernables de Japon stablemates went one-on-one in the main event of Sakura Genesis as Tetsuya Naito defended the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against New Japan Cup 2024 winner Yota Tsuji. The crowd was right behind Tsuji during the match but it wasn't to be for the challenger as Naito blocked a Gene Blast attempt down the stretch, firing his faction mate into the corner. Naito then went for a second Destino but it was briefly blocked, only for Tsuji to attempt a Falcon Arrow which Naito countered straight into his finisher. A third Destino later and Naito scored the 1-2-3 to record the successful title defence.
Following the match, Naito was interrupted by his Windy City Riot opponent Jon Moxley and it was confirmed their match on April 12 would be for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title. After Moxley left, Naito paid tribute to Yota Tsuji before the LIJ roll call to end the show.
Before the main event, there were two title changes on the show. LIJ's Shingo Takagi became a four-time NEVER Openweight Champion in the semi-main event, defeating House of Torture's EVIL to win the gold. The match was another interference-laden affair with LIJ and House of Torture coming to blows during the match. Shingo managed to score the win after spitting whiskey in EVIL's face before he threw a fistful of powder at the House of Torture leader. The Last of the Dragon followed for the pinfall win.
Bishamon's Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI also regained the IWGP Tag Team Championships from Bullet Club's KENTA and Chase Owens, picking up the win with Shoto. This made Bishamon five-time IWGP Tag Team Champions.
Prior to his face-to-face with Tetsuya Naito in the main event, Jon Moxley teamed with Shota Umino to take on House of Torture's Jack Perry and Ren Narita. It was the former AEW World Champion who came away with the win on this occasion, decking Narita with a Deathrider to win the match.
The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title was on the line at Sakura Genesis too as YOH looked to capture the belt from his former Roppongi 3K tag team partner SHO. The match quickly ended, however, due to YOH sustaining a dislocated shoulder.
