NJPW Teases Bringing Back The IWGP Intercontinental Title

Could the IWGP Intercontinental Championship return to NJPW?

The decision to officially merge the IWGP Intercontinental Championship and IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 2021 was certainly controversial, with many lamenting the loss of the classic white IC Championship, as well as the revered version IV IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt.

Now it seems that the Intercontinental Championship could be making a return in some form, with New Japan head Takami Ohbari teasing its return on Twitter/X.

Ohbari was replying to The United Empire’s Gideon Grey, with Grey asking Ohbari if he knew where the ‘white belt’ was, with Ohbari simply replying, "I'll let you know in person" with a Union Jack emoji, implying that a decision on the belt could be made at the upcoming NJPW Royal Quest III show in London’s Copperbox Arena on October 14.

The title scene in New Japan recently changed, with Will Ospreay re-dubbing the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship the United Kingdom Championship, with Ospreay set to put the belt on the line against Zack Sabre Jr. at Royal Quest III. Could Ospreay be set to swap the title for the Intercontinental Championship? We’ll have to wait and see.
