WWE originally had different plans for Gunther coming out of WrestleMania 42, it has been revealed.

Gunther looks set to be Cody Rhodes' next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship after the two-time World Heavyweight Champion laid out Cody following his win over Ricky Saints on the May 1 episode of Friday Night SmackDown. Gunther attacked Rhodes immediately after the victory, choking him out with a sleeper before the Austrian held up the Undisputed WWE Title belt.

According to Bodyslam, WWE's original post-WrestleMania 42 plans for Gunther called for the 38-year-old to have a short feud with LA Knight. Those plans were scrapped when WWE pivoted to Gunther vs. Cody Rhodes, however.

A future match between Gunther and LA Knight was teased on the Raw after WrestleMania 42 when Knight interrupted a backstage interview from the former WALTER and argued he should be next in line for a world title shot because he didn't need a three-on-one advantage to win at WrestleMania.

LA Knight was absent from the May 4 episode of SmackDown and WWE's plans for the former TNA World Champion are currently unknown.
