Our Lady Peace recently performed Chris Benoit’s WWE theme ‘Whatever’ at a live concert, the first time the band played the song for over 13 years.

Benoit used the theme during his WWE run, with Our Lady Peace recording the song for WWE’s Forceable Entry CD. Since the Benoit murder-suicide in 2007, the song has taken on a different association to what it previously had, with Our Lady Peace stating in 2012 that they were to no longer perform the track live, removing it from their catalogue.

At a show in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on February 20, lead singer Raine Maida said the following whilst introducing the song:

“This next song, is kind of a… it’s a song we don’t play. We recorded it and ended up on this big soundtrack, and it has this troubled past tied to it so we didn’t play it for a long time, until tonight actually. Things happen in your life and they can own you or you can own them, we decided to take back ownership of this song because it is our song. It has to do with mental health, and that’s how we’re taking control,” stated Maida.

Maida continued, noting how help is always there for anyone suffering with mental illness, with the band advertising a mental health crisis hotline on screen after the performance of the song.

In an earlier interview with the Edmonton Journal, Raine confirmed their reasoning for bringing the song back into their live set.
