One of the most prestigious championships in the history of professional wrestling, the IWGP Heavyweight Title was founded in 1987 as the pinnacle of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. 

The title was held by some of the best professional wrestlers of all-time before being controversially unified with the IWGP Intercontinental Championship to create the IWGP World Heavyweight Title in 2021. The much-loved final design that was used from 2008 did briefly make a comeback later in the year after Kazuchika Okada won the G1 Climax but even the belt was retired following Wrestle Kingdom 16.
