WWE's discussions with Vince Russo didn't exactly happen because the company reached out to the former WWF head writer.

It was revealed this week that WWE President Nick Khan reportedly held talks with Vince Russo over a return to the creative team this past summer, with Russo either visiting WWE HQ in Stamford, Connecticut, or being considered for a visit during those discussions.

In an update, however, PWInsider has reported that talks between the two sides only took place because Vince Russo reached out to Nick Khan, seeking a potential role with WWE. Nothing came of Russo's overtures, though, and there was no movement towards hiring Vince Russo at any point in 2026.

A WWE source joked that Russo would soon be "milking this" for his podcast. It was also joked that Nick Khan may circle back and sign Russo to a WWE Legends deal "alongside Necro Butcher."

Vince Russo began working for the then-World Wrestling Federation in 1992 as a writer on the WWF Magazine, becoming the editor of the magazine in 1994. Russo became involved in creative in 1996 and was promoted to WWF head writer in 1997. Russo remained in that role until he jumped to WCW in October 1999 as the promotion's booker.

Russo's spell in charge of WCW creative was disastrous and he took a leave of absence in October of 2000. AOL Time Warner bought out his WCW contract in May 2001, shortly after the media conglomerate sold WCW to WWF in March of that year.

Russo had a brief return to WWE in June 2002 and he was planned to be the head writer of WWE creative but a disastrous creative meeting resulted in his demotion to creative consultant. Less than two weeks after his return, Russo opted to leave WWE and join TNA instead.

Russo was a part of TNA across multiple stints between 2002 and July 2014. He was largely out of pro wrestling booking after his final TNA exit with the exception of an 11-month stint with Juggalo Championship Wrestling from October 2025 to September 2026. Russo has primarily been a pro wrestling analyst in recent years.
