Report: Adam Cole Backstage At WWE SmackDown

His name's made headlines over the preceding week

Former NXT champion Adam Cole is reportedly in attendance at tonight's WWE SmackDown in Tampa, according to a report from Fightful Select.

The report claims that Cole will attend a "high level meeting" with Vince McMahon himself. There is no indication that Cole will appear on the SmackDown broadcast itself.

Cole's WWE contract expired sometime in early July, apparently without anyone in power seemingly realizing it. Cole agreed to a short-term extension that will reportedly take him through SummerSlam weekend, but as of right now, nothing is set for Cole beyond that point.

Rumors had surfaced that AEW's Tony Khan had offered Cole a contract, though Dave Meltzer later stated that this wasn't true. Fightful Select also notes that there have apparently been no discussions between Cole and AEW at this time.

It was also noted in this week's Wrestling Observer that Cole was negotiating a possible deal to remain with WWE, but had not agreed to any terms as of yet.

Cole last wrestled on the July 27 episode of NXT (taped July 21), defeating Bronson Reed.
