A potential destination for Sheamus following his WWE exit is All Elite Wrestling, but portions of the AEW locker room aren't exactly thrilled about the prospect of the four-time WWE world champion joining the promotion despite how much they personally like Stephen Farrelly.
That is according to Bryan Alvarez, who said on Wrestling Observer Live:
"I did talk to a lot of people today in AEW who were like, 'Are we really going to take this guy?' Let me make this abundantly clear, everybody I talked to to a person was like, 'I really like Sheamus. I really like him,' but the basic gist of it is like there are so many people under contract and there's so many people that already can't even get on TV, and we're gonna hire another 48-year-old? Like, everyone's got ideas like Sheamus and Cesaro, being in the Death Riders… Nobody had anything against Sheamus personally. It was just sort of like, 'Here comes another one,' because The New Day's probably coming, then Sheamus would be coming in, and that's three more slots that people who have been there for a long time, or should be on the way up, or who should be younger, they're going to be iced out again. People weren't really thrilled about that idea."
That doesn't mean everyone is against Sheamus coming in, though. Sheamus and Claudio Castagnoli - his former tag team partner in The Bar - remain close and Castagnoli is expected to be "one of many" to push for Sheamus in All Elite Wrestling, Fightful Select reported. CMLL and outside options are another way for Sheamus and Claudio Castagnoli to work together again, one AEW source also noted to Fightful.
It emerged on Sunday, July 5 that Sheamus was leaving WWE upon the expiry of his contract, with it being revealed that WWE had offered Sheamus a pay cut during contract negotiations, which the 48-year-old turned down. The situation was said to be identical to The New Day's WWE departures.
