Report: Backstage News On AEW Signing Aussie Open

Aussie Open became All Elite on Wednesday night

All Elite Wrestling added one of the top tag teams in the world to their roster on Wednesday night as the promotion announced they had signed Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher of Aussie Open. The announcement was made after Fletcher failed to defeat Orange Cassidy in their AEW International Title match on Dynamite.

The signing of Aussie Open came as somewhat of a surprise as the tag team had been heavily featured in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, even holding the IWGP Tag Team Titles and NJPW STRONG Tag Team Championships until the belts were vacated on May 21 due to a torn meniscus suffered by Mark Davis.

The team revealed they were free agents back in February and despite their New Japan push, the promotion didn't sign them to deals and Aussie Open had been working for NJPW without contracts, Fightful Select reported. The tag team ultimately decided to ink a deal with AEW and several members of the promotion's tag team division were proponents of bringing Fletcher and Davis in. Tony Khan even paid for Mark Davis' surgery, even though Aussie Open were not under contract at the time.

WWE were also interested in signing Aussie Open but the reported hiring freeze within the company appears to have been an obstruction once again.
