John Cena’s heel turn has made WWE WrestleMania 41 a can’t miss affair, with a heel Cena set to take on WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.
Cena’s turn at Elimination Chamber on March 1 is sure to be one of the most talked about WWE events for years to come, but a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggests that the heel turn was originally planned for Mania itself.
Plans reportedly called for Cena to turn on Rhodes and align with The Rock during Mania’s finish, with the decision made to have Cena do the turn decided on the day of Elimination Chamber itself. Although Meltzer suggests that this could be false information from WWE after it was suggested they are deliberately swerving wrestling reporters, it was said that key people within WWE were informed of the late change of plans in Toronto.
Cena’s turn has indeed been headline-grabbing news, with WWE social media and YouTube hits doing remarkable numbers, whilst the incident itself was covered by the likes of ESPN and Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.
