Report: MJF Vs. Kenny Omega For AEW World Title Was Originally Planned For Redemption, Switch To Beach Break Was A Late Decision

The AEW World Championship match between MJF and Kenny Omega was originally planned for All Elite Wrestling's Redemption pay-per-view on Sunday, July 26 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Those plans changed "very recently", however.

That is according to Bryan Alvarez, who said on Wrestling Observer Radio: "This is apparently something that was decided very recently. Clearly, because it's a Canadian show called Redemption and that [Kenny Omega vs. MJF] was going to be the match. Then somebody decided, 'Well, we'll do it next week.'" 

Why exactly AEW changed their original plans is currently unknown. It was made official on Wednesday night's episode of Dynamite that MJF vs. Kenny Omega will take place on next week's special Beach Break edition of Dynamite with the stipulation that Omega can never challenge for the AEW World Championship again if he fails to defeat MJF.

The match was set up following MJF's successful AEW World Title defence against Mark Briscoe on July 1. Kenny Omega saved Briscoe from a post-match beatdown from MJF, with Omega challenging Friedman to a match later in the show, which was declined by the AEW World Champion.

MJF then pitched the stipulation of Omega not being able to challenge for the AEW World Title ever again if he fails to beat Friedman. Omega accepted the stipulation at the end of Dynamite.

This will be the third AEW World Title match between MJF and Kenny Omega, with MJF winning both previous matches. The first match took place on the October 28, 2023 edition of Collision, while the second match was the main event of the 2026 Dynasty pay-per-view on April 12.
