Following Sunday's Forbidden Door pay-per-view, Jon Moxley is the Interim AEW World Champion, having defeated NJPW's Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event.

An Interim AEW World Champion had to be crowned due to CM Punk requiring surgery on a broken foot and Moxley ultimately earned a spot in the match after he defeated Kyle O'Reilly in a qualifier. Punk will face whoever is Interim AEW World Champion when he returns from injury to crown an Undisputed Champion.

Punk's injury obviously was not planned and The Second City Saviour was originally set to take on Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door. Jon Moxley, meanwhile, would have been involved in six-man action, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The Interim AEW World Champion was set to be involved in the match that became Eddie Kingston, Shota Umino, and Wheeler Yuta vs. Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, and Minoru Suzuki.

The match would have seen Moxley link up with Umino, who was his young lion during the 2019 G1 Climax tournament.

While he would not be involved in the issues between Eddie Kingston and the Jericho Appreciation Society in a match, the JAS did jump Moxley following the main event, with the babyfaces only standing tall after new Blackpool Combat Club member Claudio Castagnoli made the save.
