Report: Return Of WWE King Of The Ring Under Consideration

Could WWE King of the Ring return?

Recent reports stated that WWE are set to shake up their pay-per-view calendar in 2023, with the rumoured removal of several gimmick PPV events.

Such news prompted fans to suggest which former PPVs names and gimmicks they’d like to see return, with many advocating for an annual return for the King of the Ring.

Now, a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggests that WWE have discussed about a return for King of the Ring as a standalone PPV event, with Vince McMahon having cancelled the yearly PPV after the 2002 edition due to declining buyrates. WWE have held several KOTR tournaments since, but these have either been ‘network specials’, or have been part of different PPV events with the 2021 KOTR finals taking place as part of Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.

Meltzer suggests that with the WWE event and PPV market being different due to guaranteed money from the Peacock deal, there is no reason not to return to previously shelved PPV names and ideas, as there is less onus on them to draw.

Any return for the King of the Ring as a PPV event would reportedly also see the Queen of the Ring tournament included, with Zelina Vega winning the first ‘Queen’s Crown’ tournament in 2021.
