Darby Allin cradles the AEW World Championship

Darby Allin’s first reign as AEW World Champion didn’t come easy, with it reported that some within AEW had doubts about it happening.

Allin defeated MJF for the championship in quick fashion on Dynamite before embarking on a gruelling reign, dropping the title back to MJF at Double or Nothing on May 24 after seven hard fought defences in 39 days. However, a report from Fightful Select states that whilst Allin had been considered for a world championship run for some time, there were some who ‘doubted’ the creative direction of Darby originally winning the championship.

After his Everest ascent, elements of the AEW fanbase speculated that the timing of Darby's climb killed his momentum within the company, but all doubters were proved wrong with Allin’s win, with his reign praised for the sheer volume of title defences, with all seven bouts occurring on free TV.

At Double or Nothing, MJF took the title back after wagering his hair against Allin’s belt, with MJF now standing as a three-time AEW World Champion. Allin was stretchered to the back after his main event loss at DoN, with Kevin Knight attacking the former champ at the close of the show.
