In his first major match since Full Gear, Wardlow was unable to regain the TNT Championship from Samoa Joe on the special New Year's Smash edition of AEW Dynamite on December 28. The former WarJoe tag team partners fought back and forth until Joe made Wardlow pass out after applying the Coquina Clutch.

The Samoan Submission Machine then added insult to injury following the contest as he cut off Wardlow's man bun with a pair of scissors. He then looked to attack Wardlow further until Darby Allin returned and made the save for Mr Mayhem.

With Samoa Joe cutting off his man bun, Wardlow's feud with Joe looks set to continue and it may well end in victory for MJF's former muscle. Fightful Select reported there has been "heavy internal discussion" within AEW that Wardlow will regain the TNT Championship "soon", likely ahead of or at the Revolution pay-per-view.

Wardlow previously reigned as TNT Champion for 176 days until he dropped the title to Samoa Joe at Full Gear in a Three Way that also featured Powerhouse Hobbs.
