The Lucha Bros of Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo looked destined to leave All Elite Wrestling and sign with WWE in 2024 but those plans were suddenly halted after AEW added injury time to Rey Fenix's contract, keeping him signed with the promotion until well into 2025.

Past reports have already noted that All Elite Wrestling saw evidence of either Penta or Fenix talking about their intention to leave AEW for WWE. In an update, though, Ibou of WrestlePurists has stated that Tony Khan actually found out what WWE had planned for the Lucha Bros on SmackDown which contributed to his decision to add injury time to Fenix's deal.

Another influence behind keeping Fenix under contract, however, was that Khan felt other talents within the promotion would try and take advantage of him.

After being asked if there was heat on the Lucha Bros within AEW, Ibou said on the WrestlePurists Dynamite and NXT review:

"People other than Tony Khan don't have strong feelings on the situation. As for Tony, Tony likes Rey Fenix. He's always liked and respected Rey Fenix. He just felt that if he let this thing slide that other people were going to start taking advantage of him and it was going to lead to a dam breaking. So they're f*cked and Penta has another month I believe and Fenix has 9-10. Tony found out what the plan was for them on SmackDown by the way and that also informed this. Take a wild guess who leaked that one backstage in AEW."

Whether AEW plan to use the Lucha Bros before their contracts expire is currently unknown. The tag team have been off TV since the summer.
