Report: Why Major WWE India Show Was Scrapped Revealed

WWE didn't make the decision

It emerged this week that WWE's rumoured major show in India had been postponed. WWE were set to run an event at the 5,000-seat Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023 - a week before India's Republic Day.

There was no word on why WWE had nixed the show but Dave Meltzer has since reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Sony SIX - WWE's TV partner in India - postponed the event as they are currently going through a merger with Zee. Sony SIX opted to postpone the show until the merger is complete, which will likely be in April.

WWE are expected to head to India after the merger is finished. Original plans called for the event to feature mostly SmackDown talent along with Indian talent, including Veer and Sanga.

WWE have sporadically held shows in India, most recently in December 2017 when the recently dethroned WWE Champion Jinder Mahal went one-on-one with Triple H in the main event. WWE also aired Superstar Spectacle, a show put together for the Indian Market, in January 2021.
