Sami Zayn is without a doubt the most popular act in all of wrestling right now, with the former NXT Champion’s trials and tribulations with Roman Reigns and The Bloodline in WWE generating enormous fan support.

With such fan support behind him, many thought WWE would change course and insert Zayn into the Mania title picture, echoing the likes of Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston in years past, but it seems Reigns will be facing Cody Rhodes at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ in singles action. After Zayn recently failed to defeat Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at Elimination Chamber he now looks set to face Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos at WrestleMania 39 in April instead.

However, it seems Zayn’s popularity hasn’t gone unnoticed in WWE, and a report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio suggests management are ‘concerned’ by just how popular Zayn is:

“The stuff with Cody and Heyman – they (WWE) were very concerned about Sami chants, which is one of the reasons why they got Heyman out there in seconds,” said Meltzer about the segment on the February 20 WWE Raw. “They did not want Cody in there by himself because they thought that – it didn’t happen – but they did everything in their power to make sure they kept that moving, they did not allow the audience a chance to start chanting or anything like that, it was just back-and-forth.

“It was designed to give the audience no chance to chant because of the feeling that if they did it would hurt Cody’s momentum. And perhaps it would, and then it could create that groundswell (for Zayn) which is exactly what they don’t want right now.”
