Report: WWE Interested In Tama Tonga

Tonga won the NEVER Openweight belt this past week

A new Fightful Select report claims that WWE has internally expressed interest in New Japan veteran Tama Tonga.

Sources in NJPW have claimed that Tonga's deal with New Japan is up in a matter of weeks. Fightful previously reported that WWE has interest in Tonga's brother Hikuleo.

Tonga was previously offered a chance to go to WWE seven years ago, but turned it down in order to team with brother Tanga Loa (former WWE wrestler Camacho) in NJPW. The two have reigned as IWGP Tag Team champions on seven occasions, first capturing the titles in 2016.

The interest in Tonga is somewhat ironic, given that he's just coming off winning the NEVER Openweight championship from Karl Anderson. Anderson rejoined WWE during his reign with the NEVER Openweight belt, and a deal was reached for him to go back to New Japan for one night to lose the belt to Tonga.

Tonga and Hikuleo are the adopted sons of former WWE World Tag Team champion Haku (Loa is Haku's biological son). Stateside, Tonga has wrestled for Impact, ROH, and New Japan Strong.
