Report: WWE Management Planned To Bury Gunther Following July 4 Raw Appearance

Gunther reportedly upset WWE management with his performance on Raw

Despite riding high as WWE Intercontinental Champion, Gunther was reportedly close to being buried on WWE TV following an ‘unsatisfactory’ performance on the July 4 edition of Raw.

The report comes via WrestleVotes who Tweeted:

“Following his appearance on RAW on 7/4, those in power at the time really soured on Gunther for whatever ridiculous reason. To the point where a burial on TV was coming. Just a month later and quite the difference…”

On July 4, Gunther interrupted and attacked R Truth, who was dressed as Uncle Sam and hailing the stars of the 1996 sci-fi Blockbuster Independence Day. Such stereotypical ‘America vs. The World’ booking is an old-school way to draw heat, and straight out of the Vince McMahon playbook, although there is no word as to what part of Gunther’s performance allegedly drew criticism from McMahon.

Since Tripe H took control of WWE Creative, Gunther has been pushed strongly, putting on a critically lauded match with Shinsuke Nakamura on the August 12 edition of SmackDown.
