Wrestling icon and former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio recently spoke to the Not About Wrestling podcast about the longstanding tradition of masks in lucha libre, and if son Dominik would carry on the Mysterio family tradition in WWE.

Rey said: “Yes, as a matter of fact there was [talk]. The only issue was that he was getting so much promotion without the mask, prior to him starting to wrestle. When I did my storyline with Samoa Joe with Brock and we just felt maybe it might be a little too late to mask him now.

“We’ve talked about it. We would love to incorporate the mask somehow someway, so the legacy continues. Even if they know his face already. We can start a trend where Dominik is outside the ring and Dominik Mysterio is inside the ring.”

Rey Mysterio took on the Mysterio mantle from his uncle Rey Misterio Sr. in Mexico, but famously lost his mask to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in WCW, a move that drew widespread criticism from wrestling fans.

Upon debuting in WWE in 2002, Mysterio reportedly asked an official lucha libre commission for permission to wear his mask again, with permission granted as Mysterio didn’t lose his mask in an official traditional luchas de apuestas máscara contra máscara (mask vs mask) match.
