Rob Van Dam Laments Missed ECW Match With Mike Awesome

Rob Van Dam vs. Mike Awesome never happened in ECW

As an ECW mainstay from 1996 until its death in 2001, Rob Van Dam wrestled just about every major name on the promotion's roster during that time.

One wrestler RVD never got to square off with was Mike Awesome, though the company's working plan was for Van Dam (as ECW Television Champion) to eventually meet Awesome (as ECW World Champion) in a pay-per-view main event. However, due to 'The Whole F'N Show' suffering an injury and Awesome leaving ECW for WCW, the match never ended up happening.

Asked who he regrets never getting to wrestle during a recent edition of his 1 Of A Kind With RVD podcast, the 52-year-old immediately responded "How about Mike Awesome?"

Van Dam also praised Awesome as an in-ring performer and leapt to his defence against people who claimed he didn't 'wrestle like a big man', saying:

"He wasn't doing a bunch of backflips and landing on his feet and stuff like that. He wasn't taking clotheslines and wanting to do a flipping bump. So you know to that I got to say it was amazing that he would do that move. He didn't do very many flying moves and that's what made him still look like a really big guy doing the moves that looked action packed, violent, hurtful, damaging, and it was. I can't believe that somebody would say that he didn’t wrestle like a big guy".

The WWE Hall of Famer recently stated that he doesn't believe he will ever formally retire from professional wrestling.
