ROH headed back to its former home of the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City last night for the 2024 Final Battle PPV. It was a night that featured a range of wrestlers from different promotions in addition to plenty of fun surprises.
The main event of the evening saw Athena successfully defend her Women’s World Title against Billie Starkz, continuing her multi-year reign with the gold. This match saw a lot of aggression, trading of shots, counters, fluid action and more as the two women showed that they knew each other well. Athena worked on Starkz’ leg throughout the match, which led to it giving out when she began gaining momentum and attempting to hit big power moves. After near-falls, shenanigans, and cheating, Starkz found herself victim to an exposed turnbuckle, leading to Athena scoring the victory.
Chris Jericho took on Matt Cardona for the ROH World Championship, though it was Cardona who rallied first, coming at Jericho with a lot of force and aggression, whipping him with a belt until Jericho managed to turn the tide with a backdrop on the ramp. Jericho dominated for a large portion, trash talking fans and doing his usual bit of grabbing the camera. Eventually, Cardona recovered and began hitting some big moves on Jericho, with some near-falls littered in. Jericho eventually locked Cardona in the Liontamer, though despite the numbers game from Jericho’s faction, Cardona escaped and hit both a Codebreaker and Ruff Rider, only for Brian Keith to interfere, allowing Jericho to win. After the match, the heels beat down Cardona, only for a returning Bandido to make the save.
There was another big return too as during the opening match, Danhausen made a shock appearance, attacking Mason Madden at ringside, allowing Atlantis Jr. to build up momentum to overcome the numbers game and defeat Mansoor.
Elsewhere, Lee Moriarty, the reigning Pure Champion, issued an open challenge for his belt, and was greeted by none other than former ROH World & Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness, who returned to the ring for AEW twice this year after over a decade out of the ring. This marked his first ROH match in fifteen years. After a back and forth 15 minute match, McGuinness submitted to a rope-assisted Border City Stretch.
Jay Lethal also rebirthed his former ‘Black Machismo’ gimmick, which is something!
