Roman Reigns Vs. John Cena Official For WWE SummerSlam

Cena goes for his 17th World title

It was confirmed on Friday night's SmackDown that Universal champion Roman Reigns would put his title on the line against John Cena at SummerSlam on August 21.

WWE had teased that Finn Balor would be Reigns' challenger at SummerSlam, with a contract signing taking place on SmackDown. However, Baron Corbin took Balor out, and tried to sign the contract himself. Cena then headed off Corbin, before he himself signed the dotted line.

Paul Heyman protested, but Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville allowed the signing to stand.

Reigns had previously declined Cena's challenge for the title.

It will mark Cena's first World title match since losing to then-WWE champion Daniel Bryan at a house show in December 2018. His last televised World title match was a WWE title six-pack challenge at Fastlane in 2018, which he failed to win.

The current card for WWE SummerSlam, taking place Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, is as follows:

* WWE Universal: Roman Reigns (c) vs. John Cena

* Raw Women's: Nikki A.S.H. (c) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley
