WWE NXT recorded two upcoming episodes of NXT TV on December 13, setting up several matches and angles ahead of NXT New Year’s Evil on January 2 2024.

The recorded episodes - to air on December 19 and December 26 - featured an injury angle, with NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov on the receiving end.

Dragunov cut a promo detailing his achievements in 2023 when Ridge Holland showed up, stating he was back in NXT for redemption, and wanted to earn his way to a title shot. Dragunov said Holland doesn’t have to wait, and granted him a match for the main event of the December 19 episode.

During the match, Dragunov locks in a submission on Holland, with Holland’s escape involving a high angle suplex dumping Dragunov on his head. The referee called the match off, with Dragunov stretchered to the back in a neck brace, with Holland visibly distraught at the events.

The angle clearly played on real life events, with holland having put Big E out with a broken neck after a botched belly-to-belly suplex in March 2022. Where this leads for Holand is unknown, and it remains to be seen if Dragunov will take any time off, or if he will indeed be back for his scheduled title match against Trick Williams at New Year’s Evil.
