John Cena

A rumoured WrestleMania opponent for John Cena was backstage at this week's SmackDown, reportedly ironing out details of the marquee match - and it wasn't The Undertaker. According to Justin Barrasso of

Sports Illustrated

, the identity of Cena's opponent is actually Rey Mysterio.

Barrasso writes:

'Mysterio’s opponent at WrestleMania is currently scheduled to be John Cena, who is in need of a marquee challenger after it was ruled that The Undertaker will not be working at this year’s show.

Cena requested to work a ‘Mania match with either Samoa Joe, who is currently injured, or Mysterio, who left more of a buzz at the Royal Rumble with his appearance than any other wrestler, including the debuting Ronda Rousey.'

Mysterio has had a busy schedule in 2018 so far, competing on a weekly basis in the UK for 5 Star Wrestling, and is currently booked to face Jushin 'Thunder' Liger at New Japan Pro Wrestling's 'Strong Style Evolved' show in Long Beach, California. That event is set to take place on March 25th.

Cena is currently in the midst of a storyline where he is attempting to forge a path to WrestleMania, having failed to win both the Royal Rumble and the recent men's Elimination Chamber match. He teased calling out Undertaker on this week's Raw, before appearing on SmackDown and wrestling WWE Champion AJ Styles in a non-title main event match.

By defeating Styles, Cena has secured a place in the multi-man title match at Fastlane on March 11th. The bout, for Styles' WWE Championship, also features Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler, and Baron Corbin.
