Wrestling fans rejoiced on the January 19 edition of WWE SmackDown, when Pete Dunne made his official return, ditching the ‘Butch’ persona to officially reform British Strong Style with Tyler Bate.

The ‘Butch’ gimmick was a Vince McMahon idea, and was decried by many WWE fans. In a new interview with Muscle Man Malcolm, former WWE star Mansoor gave some more insight into McMahon’s plans for Butch:

"Dude, Vince [McMahon] wanted Butch to be a guy that never wrestles. Vince wanted Butch, Pete Dunne, to be a scrappy little guy, who just attacks people, but he never wanted Butch to actually wrestle a match,” said Mansoor.

When Paul Levesque [Triple H] officially took over as Chief Content Officer for WWE, many assumed it was only a matter of time before he allowed Pete Dunne to be Pete Dunne again. Dunne has long been seen as a ‘Triple H guy’, with Dunne seemingly having the backing of Levesque since the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament in Blackpool in 2017.

During Levesque’s time in charge of NXT, Dunne was first positioned as the backbone of NXT UK, before becoming one of the top names in NXT prime.
