John Cena remains WWE Champion after victory over CM Punk at Night of Champions, in a match that saw Cena nail referee Charles Robinson with a shoulder tackle.
Robinson was sprinting to the ring when Seth Rollins was attempting to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase after he and his crew demolished CM Punk, but Cena sprang out of nowhere to do his best Monty Brown and pounce ‘Lil’ Naitch’ on the floor.
Per a report from Fightful Select, Robinson is fine after taking the bump, with the spot eliciting huge laughter from backstage.
Robinson is WWE’s longest serving referee, having donned the zebra stripes since joining from WCW in 2001. Prior to WWE, Robinson worked for WCW from 1997 until its closure, most memorably as Ric Flair and The Four Horseman’s favoured referee, hence the ‘Lil’ Naitch’ nickname.
Whilst Night of Champions didn’t see the WWE Championship change hands, we were given a glimpse at who could challenge Cena in the future, with Cody Rhodes defeating Randy Orton to become King of the Ring to set-up a championship match against Cena at WWE SummerSlam on August 2 and August 3.
