Censorship of fan chants during WWE shows was once again prominent on the May 26 edition of Monday Night Raw as chants of "F*ck you Rollins" were repeatedly silenced for fans watching the show on Netflix.
Chants involving cursing and swearing have been common at WWE shows for decades, but the chants have often been censored on Netflix. Steps have even been taken to remove swearing from WWE's library of content as chants of "Holy sh*t" were piped over with fake "This is awesome" chants on the Netflix version of WrestleMania XL night one.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE have discussed how to combat swearing at shows and one of the options that has been suggested would see the company ask fans before an event to not swear.
"With WWE, it is so annoying having to deal with that constant when they do the chants. Sometimes I think, and people have actually suggested this, of just like making an announcement of, 'Hey, we're here. It's a TV show. It's going all over the world. We want you to have fun, don't swear.' In the past if they had done that, the audience would have then started swearing because they wouldn't want to be controlled. But I think this audience is mature enough and smart enough and everything like that that if you told them that I think they might be okay with it...That is something that has been suggested, I know that, but they don't do it," Meltzer said.
Whether WWE plan to adopt such a policy in the future is unknown, but it appears the company will continue to bleep out fan chants with cursing for the foreseeable future.
