The future is truly now in WWE NXT 2.0 as the first television special of 2022 - New Year's Evil - saw a new NXT Champion crowned and two other Titles unified.

NXT New Year's Evil 2022 opened with a stellar match between NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes and NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong as each man sought to unify the Titles. A slugfest of a match, it was Hayes who would eventually get the win by hitting a Legdrop onto the back of Strong's neck, claiming the pin and both Championships.

AJ Styles would next grace NXT with his presence, to a rapturous reception from the live crowd. The Phenomenal One would once again get into a verbal exchange with Grayson Waller, and call out the Australian upstart for a match right there and then.

Waller would scoff at the suggestion, saying he should be in the main event, and the match between the duo was made for next week's show.

MSK and their 'shaman' Riddle were in action next, seeing off WALTER and NXT Tag Team Champions Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel in a terrific match. It was the Raw Tag Team Champion who got the win for his team, levelling WALTER with a Suplex before taking out Fabian Aichner with an assisted blockbuster and a Floating Bro.

Riddle then followed by an RKO out of nowhere to Marcel Barthel for the victory.

Mandy Rose successfully retained the NXT Women's Championship in a Triple Threat Match against Raquel Gonzalez and Cora Jade. It appeared Gonzalez was set to reclaim her Title from Rose, hitting her finisher, only for Jade to throw her out of the ring and go for the cover herself. Rose would counter, getting the roll-up and the pin to defend her Championship.

In the show's main event, Bron Breakker would finally achieve his destiny and defeat Tommaso Ciampa and take the NXT Championship. A brutal bout, the match nearly came to an end as Ciampa delivered three straight running knees and a Fairytale Ending. Unlike the first match back in October, Breakker kicked out at two.

Breakker then took control with a flying bulldog off the top rope, before locking in the Recliner and forcing Ciampa to tap, earning him his first Title in NXT.
