A new name for WALTER and more
Jan 19, 2022
NXT held their latest show on Tuesday, January 18 which featured the beginning of the Men's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and a main event pitting WALTER against Roderick Strong.
NXT opened with a promo from LA Knight and the former IMPACT World Champion quickly called out Grayson Waller, who obliged, but only to throw Knight a restraining order. Having come prepared, though, Knight acknowledged the restraining order but he suddenly coaxed Dexter Lumis into the WWE Performance Center to go after 'The Arrogant Aussie.'
The former Eli Drake then left Waller with two choices; he could lift the restraining order and face Knight or he could be put to sleep by Dexter Lumis.
Waller ultimately chose the match with Lumis and the two men squared off after a commercial break. Lumis was unable to exact revenge on the former Matty Wahlberg, however, as he was suddenly attacked by the returning Saurav in the final moments while the official was distracted. This, of course, allowed Waller to connect with a Stunner back in the ring for the victory.
The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic then got underway in the second match on the show and The Creed Brothers advanced following their win over Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs. Jensen's night only got worse too as Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter invited the tag team out for drinks later in the show, but Jensen became flustered after Wendy Choo teased that he thought Carter was attractive.
Shenanigans came into play during the second Dusty Cup match of Legado Del Fantasma vs. Malik Blade and Edris Enofe. Santos Escobar had confronted Bron Breakker earlier in the night and the NXT Champion didn't take kindly to interference from Escobar in the match so he made his way to the ring and carried the former El Hijo del Fantasma to the back. This distracted Joaquin Wilde, though, and Malik Blade took advantage, rolling him up for the victory.
There was another surprise win due to interference elsewhere on the show as Ivy Nile counted a KLR Bomb from Kay Lee Ray into a roll-up win after Mandy Rose distracted the former NXT UK Women's Champion. Toxic Attraction then attacked KLR after the match until Indi Hartwell and Persia Pirotta made the save to set up a Six-Woman Tag for next week.
Elsewhere on NXT, Dante Chen vs. Guru Raaj ended in a no-contest after Duke Hudson attacked both men, Harland assaulted Odyssey Jones backstage, Solo Sikoa and Sarray debuted new looks, Dakota Kai defeated Yulisa Leon following a confrontation earlier in the night, and Cora Jade failed to convince Raquel Gonzalez to team with her in the Women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
A Number One Contender's Match for the NXT North American Title was also set after Carmelo Hayes and Cameron Grimes interrupted Tony D'Angelo's memorial service for Pete Dunne. Grimes and D'Angelo will go one-on-one for a shot at the gold next week.
In the main event of NXT, WALTER and Roderick Strong went one-on-one in an entertaining 12-minute match that Der Ring General won following a brutal Powerbomb. Before the ring announcer could announce him as the winner, though, WALTER grabbed the microphone and declared, 'The winner of this match is Gunther,' seemingly revealing his new in-ring name.
Roderick Strong then looked to attack Gunther, only to be cut off by Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner, who were then halted by The Creed Brothers. A pull-apart brawl then ensued until NXT went off the air.
