WWE NXT Results - June 15, 2021: Samoa Joe Returns, Tornado Tag Main Event

What happened on the first show since In Your House?

William Regal's future was the hot topic heading into this week's NXT after the cliffhanger ending of TakeOver: In Your House. The black and gold brand quickly resolved this issue, though, and many of the rivalries that weren't spotlighted at TakeOver continued or ended here.

Samoa Joe returns

This week’s show opened up with an emotional William Regal. The general manager reflected on his journey on the black and gold brand while he tried to fight back tears. Regal then said he doesn't think he's capable of being general manager anymore amidst all the chaos and he looked set to step down before Karrion Kross and Scarlett interrupted.

Kross claimed he proved he could control NXT through chaos and violence at In Your House and he wanted Regal to admit he was leaving and never return.

The Herald Of Doomsday then continued to goad the wrestling legend until Samoa Joe's music played over the titantron and The Samoan Submission Machine marched to the ring two months after his WWE release.

Regal told Joe that he wanted him to be the new general manager of NXT, citing his inability to control the brand. Joe immediately told him "absolutely not." Instead, while glaring a hole through Karrion Kross, Joe said he would be more than happy to ensure Regal gets the respect he deserves from everybody.

With the situation almost resolved, Regal put conditions in place for the new arrangement. Joe could not compete inside the squared circle and he could not lay a hand on anyone unless provoked. Joe accepted and got in the NXT Champion's face, demanding to know why Kross was still in the ring as "Joe is gonna kill you" chants filled the Capitol Wrestling Center.

Kross could see where this was going and he headed backstage with his tail between his legs with Scarlett.

Breezango def. Imperium

After that momentous opening segment, it was time for the first match of the night as Imperium tried to execute WALTER's orders and defeat Breezango.

Unfortunately for Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner, it wasn't second time lucky and Tyler Breeze suddenly picked up the win for his team with a small package on Aichner after 10 minutes.

WALTER's henchmen were infuriated after the loss and they pummelled Breezango post-match, putting Breeze down with the European Bomb before they covered him with an Imperium flag.

After the beatdown, the broadcast headed backstage to show an angry William Regal screaming at Kyle O'Reilly and Adam Cole while officials kept the former friends apart. Regal told them they could settle their differences in an Unsanctioned Match at the Great American Bash. They'll both be in action next week too where they can pick their poison.

O'Reilly then broke free and started punching Cole, almost hitting Regal in the process, which prompted Samoa Joe to enter the fray. Adam Cole made a mistake, though, as he pushed Joe out of the way to get back at O'Reilly. As a result, Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch and choked Cole out.

After a commercial break, Santos Escobar recalled being crushed by Bronson Reed before he announced his intention to exact revenge, one on one.

Kushida def. Trey Baxter – NXT Cruiserweight Championship

Kushida was in the ring for the next match on the show and his open challenge was answered by the debuting Blake Christian, now known as Trey Baxter.

Similar to Carmelo Hayes a few weeks ago, Baxter looked impressive during the 10-minute match, but Kushida retained the title after applying the Hoverboard Lock.

After the match, Kyle O'Reilly, who had made his way to ringside, challenged the NXT Cruiserweight Champion to a match on next week's show. Kool Kyle had picked his poison.

A backstage interview with Franky Monet followed and she announced she would be in action next week. The former Knockouts Champion then caught up with Aliyah and Jessi Kamea and tried to convince them to abandon Robert Stone.

After another break, Mercedes Martinez challenged Xia Li to a match anytime and promised to knock Mei Ying out of her chair.

Million Dollar Coronation

Ted DiBiase made his way to the ring for the next segment and he celebrated with LA Knight after the new Million Dollar Champion arrived in a sports car.

LA Knight briefly tried to hold back tears as he told DiBiase he was a hero of his. He recalled watching Ted on TV while he was a child and claimed he had a Million Dollar Man action figure. Knight then thanked DiBiase for allowing him to continue his legacy which led to Ted crowning Knight the Million Dollar Champion.

After the title was placed over LA Knight’s shoulder, the former Eli Drake said he now has everything that he wants. With this in mind, he revealed it was time "to drop what I don't need" and he punched DiBiase, sending the WWE Hall Of Famer crashing to the mat.

Drake then continued the beatdown until Cameron Grimes charged to the ring and made the save.

Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter

Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai made their way to the ring to face Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter next, but they were confronted by Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon at the gorilla position. William Regal and Samoa Joe sprung into action, though, and kept the two teams apart.

Once the in-ring action got underway, Catanzaro and Carter looked impressive but they were unable to secure the win. Dakota Kai instead won the match for her team after 12 minutes with the GTK to Catanzaro.

Segment with The Way and Io Shirai

Io Shirai headed to the ring for the next segment, but she was quickly interrupted by Candice LeRae.

The Poison Pixie said she still can't stand Shirai and revealed the former NXT Women's Champion picked the wrong time to screw with her. A sneak attack from Indi Hartwell followed moments later. Shirai managed to briefly fight back but the NXT Women's Tag Team Champions soon regained control.

The Way were then about to put Shirai through the announce table until Zoey Stark charged to the ring and made the save for The Genius Of The Sky.

After that segment came to an end, it was revealed Diamond Mine would be opening next week.

McKenzie Mitchell also tried to interview William Regal and Samoa Joe in the general manager's office but they interrupted by Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory. Gargano said it was great that Joe was here. The Samoan Submission Machine seemed less impressed, though, and he demanded the North American Champion leave. Pete Dunne then walked into the office and stared at Joe.

Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher def. Grizzled Young Veterans – Tornado Tag Team Match

The main event followed and both teams fought back and forth in an excellent match to seemingly end their feud.

The match featured a Super Air Raid Crash from Ciampa and a Doomsday Device on the outside from GYV. Drake and Gibson then thought they had the match won after they connected with an Elevated Backstabber to Thatcher but Ciampa recovered just in the nick of time and broke up the pin.

An angry GYV put Ciampa through the particle board on the announce table before they moved him onto the table. Gibson went for a Piledriver to end The Blackheart's night but Ciampa reversed it into an Air Raid Crash.

This left James Drake all alone and Toothless Tim and Ciampa took advantage. The former NXT Champion decked Drake with Fairytale Ending and the babyface team followed up with an Armbar-Ankle Lock double submission which forced the GYV man to tap out.

Ciampa and Thatcher celebrated after the match and McKenzie Mitchell caught up with Samoa Joe and William Regal outside before NXT went off the air. The new management team declared things would be a little different around the CWC and they drove off in an SUV to end the show.
