WWE NXT UK's Bailey Matthews Undergoes Name Change

He won't be a Regal

NXT UK Superstar Bailey Matthews, the son of NXT General Manager William Regal, has undergone a name change within WWE.

Matthews previously debuted on NXT UK in February 2021 under his birth name, but it was revealed on the September 16 edition of NXT UK that he will be known as Charlie Dempsey going forward.

The announcement was made during a vignette on NXT UK, during which Dempsey said:

"An inspiration of mine used to say, 'The body is just like a ladder, having to move up and down it with every move you do.' Hearing that, something clicked in my head. I've actually gone out of my way to seek out the British competitors of the past and train with them, to learn this style that I've come to adopt. I'm not going to do any flips out of the ring, treat this like an acrobat contest. I'm going to take my opponent down and grind them down to a paste. And I'm going to show you something that you've never seen before."

The vignette then ended by declaring that Dempsey will be "coming soon" to NXT UK.

WWE announced Matthews had signed with the promotion in January 2021. Matthews made his in-ring debut on the independent scene in 2018 and he looked set for a career in New Japan Pro-Wrestling after he appeared as a young lion at Wrestle Kingdom 14. Matthews ultimately joined WWE one year later, though.
