For the first time since 2008, WWE presented Saturday Night's Main Event as the series' reboot emanated on December 14 from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The show called back to Saturday Night's Main Event's heyday in the 1980s with a classic set-up and Jesse 'The Body' Ventura on commentary.
RESULTS BEGIN BELOW
Saturday Night's Main Event began with a classic set-up and even a WWE version of the classic World Wrestling Federation logo. Joe Tessitore introduced the fans to the show before Jesse 'The Body' Ventura made his way to the hosting area with his iconic feather boas.
Pat McAfee, making his return to WWE, then headed to the announce table and joined Michael Cole for the broadcast. It was confirmed Jesse Ventura will be on commentary for the main event of Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Drew McIntyre def. Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn didn't even allow Drew McIntyre to take off his ring jacket and kilt, attacking 'Irn Dru' as soon as Zayn entered the ring. This allowed Zayn to control the opening moments, taking out McIntyre on the outside with a Sitdown-Springboard Moonsault. Zayn was caught on a Plancha attempt soon after and McIntyre threw Zayn over the announce table as Saturday Night's Main Event went to a commercial break.
McIntyre was still in control when Saturday Night's Main Event returned but Zayn's comeback soon began and he went for a Helluva Kick but McIntyre blocked it and followed up with a Spinebuster for a near fall. A Sit-Out Powerbomb followed but McIntyre once again got his shoulder up at two.
McIntyre went for an Air Raid Crash from the middle rope but Sami countered into a Sunset Flip Powerbomb which Drew only kicked out of at 2.8. McIntyre went for a Claymore soon after but Zayn blocked it with a kick and followed up with a Blue Thunder Bomb. The fans in the Nassau Coliseum thought that was it but McIntyre once again managed to kick out.
Zayn looked to continue his momentum but ran straight into a Claymore from McIntyre. A 1-2-3 later and McIntyre was the man with his hand raised in the opening contest of Saturday Night's Main Event.
Liv Morgan (c) def. IYO SKY - Women's World Championship
The action remained even in the early going until IYO SKY sent us into another commercial break following an Asai Moonsault. SKY was still on top when the broadcast returned and she took out Liv Morgan again with a Suicide Dive.
SKY followed up with a Missile Dropkick back in the ring but it was only enough for a near fall before she missed on the Double Knees into the corner, which allowed Morgan to fire back with a Backstabber and Codebreaker. The challenger fought back with a trio of German Suplexes which led to "Let's Go IYO" chants inside the Nassau Coliseum.
SKY then slipped on a Springboard which allowed the Women's World Champion to hit another Codebreaker. Morgan looked for Oblivion but ran straight into a Crossface and SKY followed up by hitting a Kamigoye and Meteora which left Morgan with a bloodied nose. SKY then went for her Moonsault but Morgan got her feet up and hit Oblivion for the clean win.
As Morgan made her way to the back, she was cut off by Rhea Ripley, which led to a face-off between the Women's World Champion and her longtime rival.
Gunther (c) def. Damian Priest & Finn Balor - Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Championship
In his fourth title defence, Gunther put the World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Damian Priest and Finn Balor. The match was originally set to be a singles match between Gunther and Balor but the contest was changed to a Triple Threat on Monday's Raw.
Gunther went for a Powerbomb early but the move was blocked by Finn Balor. Damian Priest and Gunther then took turns clubbing Finn Balor and Priest took out Gunther soon after with a Senton over the top rope to the floor to send us to another commercial break.
When the show returned, Damian Priest cut off Finn Balor's dominance before Gunther levelled both men with Big Boots. Gunther followed up with a Boston Crab to Damian Priest and a Chop from Balor only angered the World Heavyweight Champion. An exchange allowed Damian Priest to take down both of his opponents with a Double Clothesline. This led to a load of chops from Priest to Gunther before Damian worked over both Gunther and Balor.
Priest then went Old School to Gunther before a Crossbody from Priest to Balor scored a near fall for the former world champion. Gunther prevented Priest from hitting Razor's Edge to Balor. Finn then hit a Slingblade to Priest and another one to Gunther before Gunther blocked a Shotgun Dropkick.
Priest sent Balor over the top rope which allowed Gunther to apply a Sleeper to Damian. Priest managed to escape and he hit South of Heaven but before he could make the cover Balor took him down. Balor then hit a Shotgun Dropkick and set up for a Coup de Grace but Gunther blocked it by kicking the top rope.
Later, Priest hit a Razor's Edge from the top to Gunther and Balor followed with a Coup de Grace. That looked to be it but Priest broke up the pin. Soon after, Priest hit South of Heaven on Balor and was about to win until Gunther grabbed him by the hair and dragged him to the outside before locking in a Sleeper on Priest. Moments later, Gunther took out Priest with a Powerbomb on the steel steps.
With Finn Balor easy prey back in the ring, Gunther decked the Judgment Day member with a Powerbomb to pick up the pinfall win.
Chelsea Green def. Michin - Women's United States Championship
The inaugural Women's United States Champion was crowned in the next match as the tournament final came down to Chelsea Green and Michin.
The match saw Michin dominate the early going, applying a bridge to Chelsea Green across the bottom rope. After the move was broken by the referee, Piper Niven decked Michin when the official wasn't looking, which led to a shouting exchange between Chelsea Green and Michael Cole as SNME went to commercial.
Upon the show's return, Chelsea Green ran straight into a Powerbomb but Green fired back soon after with a Rough Rider. Disaster then almost struck as Green whiffed on a Suicide Dive, fortunately Piper Niven caught her friend. Michin then took down Piper Niven with the Eat the Feet and she hit it again, this time to Chelsea Green in the ring. That looked to be it but Green got her foot on the bottom rope as the fans in Long Island rallied behind the former Laurel Van Ness.
Piper Niven was sent crashing off the apron by Michin which allowed Green to counter from the top rope into the Unprettier for the win. Chelsea Geen is the first-ever WWE Women's United States Champion.
Cody Rhodes (c) def. Kevin Owens - Undisputed WWE Championship
Main Event time as Kevin Owens looked to make the 'Canadian Dream' come true at Saturday Night's Main Event and defeat Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
In another move that would only upset Cody Rhodes, Cody wore a red elbow pad in a callback to Dusty Rhodes. In another retro moment, Cody Rhodes, after two years, finally got his wish and entered a WWE show with the WINGED EAGLE version of the WWE Championship. For one night only, the Winged Eagle was back.
Once the match got underway, Kevin Owens immediately spilt to the outside as Jesse Ventura joined Michael Cole and Pat McAfee on the call for the main event. Rhodes quickly got sick of KO spilling to the floor, and went after the challenger before taking him out with a Suicide Dive. Rhodes clutched his ankle, though, and he was hobbled for the rest of the match.
The injured ankle slowed Cody and Owens took advantage, hitting a side slam on the announce table before he said hi to Randy Orton, who was sitting at home courtesy of that Piledriver from Kevin Owens. KO remained on top during the picture-in-picture break but we could hear Michael Cole chatting to Pat McAfee and Jesse Ventura about what they planned to say when the broadcast returned.
The commentary team then put their plan into action as KO hit Cody with a Senton from the top rope. Cody couldn't take it when KO tried to hit Dusty's Bionic Elbow and he countered with a Bionic Elbow of his own. The WWE Champion followed up with a Disaster Kick but it was only enough for a two count. Rhodes hyped the crowd up for a Cody Cutter but KO rolled to the outside to avoid it. Cody then ran straight into a Super Kick and KO tried to take out the champ on the announce table but Rhodes countered into an RKO on the table.
Rhodes followed up with a Cody Cutter back in the ring but KO managed to kick out once again. Owens fired back with his Fisherman's Buster from the top rope but it was Cody's turn to kick out this time. Owens went for the Strunner but Rhodes blocked it. Cody then went for Cross Rhodes but Owens blocked it and pushed Cody, sending him tumbling into the referee.
With Charles Robinson down, KO hit a Stunner and had the match won but there was no referee to count the pinfall. Referee Eddie Orengo charged to the ring but the delay allowed Cody to kick out at two.
Owens went for a Pop-Up Powerbomb but Rhodes avoided it and went for a Cody Cutter but took out Orengo after KO dodged it. With two officials down, Owens grabbed a steel chair but missed a shot and ate a Cody Cutter from Rhodes. Cody then hit Cross Rhodes on the chair and got rid of the evidence as Charles Robinson recovered and counted the pinfall victory.
Cody Rhodes ended Saturday Night's Main Event with the Winged Eagle aloft but his programme with Kevin Owens seemed far from over.
