Roman Reigns & Jey Uso def. Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed
WWE SummerSlam night one opened with SummerSlam host Cardi B shrieking about Randy Orton and the tristate area, but it was soon time for the opening contest as Roman Reigns teamed with his SummerSlam 2023 opponent Jey Uso to take on the Bron Brons of Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed.
After 13-14 minutes of entrances, the in-ring action began hot as all four men brawled in the centre of the ring, with the babyfaces standing tall. After some YEETING with Jey Uso's entrance music playing once again, the heels dragged Roman Reigns out of the ring, but they didn't account for Jey Uso, who took everyone out with an Uso Splash to the outside.
Jey Uso took the action back to the ring but Bron Breakker ran the ropes with immense speed and flattened the former World Heavyweight Champion with a Lariat. Bron Breakker then took out Roman Reigns on the outside with a shoulder tackle straight to WWE's highest paid wrestler's face.
What followed was several minutes of the Bron Brons on top, working over Jey Uso, during which Bron Breakker mocked Roman Reigns by chanting "Roman, Roman Reigns, you should have stayed away" while holding Jey in a Headlock. The tide looked set to turn after Bron Breakker went for a Crossbody over the announce table and missed, but Breakker managed to recover and used a football tackle to stop Jey from making the hot tag.
Uso eventually managed to make the hot tag and Roman Reigns ran wild, soon hitting a big dive to the outside that almost ended in disaster as Reigns overshot Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed. The Big Dog followed up with Superman Punches to Reed and Breakker, but Reigns didn't realise Bronson was legal and ate a Cannonball from the former JONAH when he went to cover Breakker.
A Suicide Dive from Bronson Reed to Reigns and Uso then almost ended in disaster as he almost overshot the move. Breakker then clobbered Roman with a Crossbody over the announce table. Breakker and Bronson followed up with the Steinerizer but Jey kicked out at two.
Breakker tried to Spear Reigns through the barricade but he ran straight into a Superman Punch from Roman. One big "OOOH AAAH" later and Reigns Speared Breakker through the barricade. Bronson set up for a Tsunami to Jey but Reigns recovered and decked Reed with a Superman Punch.
The babyfaces followed up with a 1D to Bronson Reed but Breakker, somehow, managed to recover and break up the pin. Bron went for the Spear to Uso but Roman pushed his cousin out of the way and ate the Spear. Uso then hit Breakker with a Superkick before a Spear and Uso Splash to Bronson Reed for the victory.
Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss def. Judgment Day (Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez) (c) - WWE Women's Tag Team Championships
The not-friends of Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair challenged Judgment Day's Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez for the WWE Women's Tag Team Titles in the second match at SummerSlam.
The champions took control within seconds, slowly working over Charlotte Flair which absolutely killed the crowd inside MetLife Stadium. Flair eventually managed to make the hot tag to Bliss, although her time on top didn't last long, with Perez avoiding a Sister Abigail with a rake to the eyes.
Bliss managed to fight back, though, and she went for Twisted Bliss, only for Perez to get her knees up. What followed was more dominance from Judgment Day as they slowly worked over Alexa Bliss this time. After several minutes, it was Charlotte's turn for a hot tag and she took out her opponents with a Crossbody from the top rope before wiping out Rodriguez with an inside-the-ring Buckshot Lariat.
The crowd recovered for Charlotte's comeback and Flair scored a near fall following a Moonsault to both Rodriguez and Perez. Disaster struck soon after, though, when Alexa Bliss accidentally punched Charlotte Flair. Rodriguez took advantage with a Tejana Bomb before Pop Rox from Perez, but Bliss broke up the pin with a Neckbreaker. Alexa dragged Flair to the corner for the tag and after escaping an inside cradle attempt, Bliss set up for Sister Abigail when Charlotte Flair appeared behind her, teasing a heel turn.
Instead, though, Charlotte took out Rodriguez with a Big Boot before Bliss hit a Sister Abigail to Roxanne Perez for the victory to crown new WWE Women's Tag Team Champions.
Sami Zayn def. Karrion Kross
The rubber match between Sami Zayn and Karrion Kross was third at SummerSlam, with Zayn winning their first match at WWE Night of Champions. Kross then won their second encounter on the July 21 episode of Raw. Their SummerSlam match had the stipulation that Sami Zayn had to say Kross told the truth if Karrion won. If Kross lost, however, the two-time NXT Champion had to say he was wrong about Zayn.
Karrion Kross dominated the opening moments, eventually demanding that Zayn say Kross had told the truth. This only fired up Sami, though, and he clobbered Kross with punches in the corner. Zayn then went for a Blue Thunder Bomb but Kross avoided it and followed up with a Saito Suplex for a near fall.
Scarlett got involved soon after, handing Kross a steel pipe. The referee was distracted by Scarlett and Kross tried to use the weapon but Karrion ran straight into a Blue Thunder Bomb. The fans inside MetLife Stadium thought that was it, but the former Killer Kross kicked out at two. An annoyed Zayn punched Kross over an over again, being dragged off his opponent by the referee. The official then intervened again after Zayn kept kicking Kross in the head.
An upset Zayn was offered the steel pipe by Scarlett and Sami was given the choice of turning heel, which, of course, he turned down and threw the pipe away. This allowed Kross to roll up Zayn, but Zayn managed to kick out. Zayn then dumped Kross on his head with an Exploder Suplex in the corner and hit the Helluva Kick for the win.
Following the match, it was announced by Michael Cole that the official attendance at SummerSlam night one was 53,161. WWE then paid tribute to Hulk Hogan and Nick Hogan was shown sitting at ringside as 'Real American' filled MetLife Stadium.
Tiffany Stratton (c) def. Jade Cargill - WWE Women's Championship
WWE Women's Champion vs. Queen of the Ring winner in the next match at SummerSlam and Jade Cargill dominated the opening moments following a Big Boot to the air which still caused Tiffany Stratton to take a bump.
Stratton soon fired back with a Suicide Dive to the floor, although the crowd remained very quiet inside MetLife Stadium. Stratton hit a Swanton Bomb, and Cargill kicked out at one. After some back-and-forth action, Jade hit an Airplane Spin into a Blue Thunder Bomb (Eye of the Storm) for a near fall.
Stratton fired back with a Rolling Senton and went for the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, but Cargill blocked it. Stratton fired back with a Falcon Arrow to leave both women down.
After they got back to their feet, Stratton hit a poor-looking Alabama Slam and went for the PME, but Cargill got her feet up to block the move. A Jaded followed but Cargill rolled too far, putting Tiffany's foot on the bottom rope in the process.
Cargill went for another Jaded but Tiffany rolled though into a Bret Hart-esque pinning attempt for two. Cargill then hit a Chokeslam and went for an Avalanche Jaded but Tiffany countered into a front-facing Code Red-esque move and hit the PME moments later for the shock win.
Drew McIntyre & Logan Paul def. Jelly Roll & Randy Orton
Semi-main event time and Jelly Roll had his in-ring debut as the singer/songwriter teamed with Randy Orton against Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul.
After some singing of 'Voices' from Jelly Roll, he made his way to the ring with Randy Orton, with Jelly Roll deciding to wrestle in a shirt for some reason like he was a Goth Right to Censor member. Jelly Roll was then welcomed to the business with a cheap shot from Logan Paul before the bell rang.
Issues emerged straight away as Jelly Roll tagged himself in as soon as the bell was rung, something which annoyed Randy Orton. Roll hit a Shoulder Tackle, Powerslam, and Jumping Elbow complete with Ric Flair strut to Logan Paul in the opening moments. Jelly Roll looked more scared when Drew McIntyre was tagged in and Roll was about to tag out until McIntyre slapped him on the back of the head.
Orton psyched up Jelly Roll but he walked straight into a throt-grab from McIntyre. Jelly Roll briefly became Dusty Rhodes with some punches but he ate a Glasgow Kiss from Irn Dru and McIntyre proceeded to work over Jelly Roll as the crowd remained flat.
Netflix censorship then struck for "F*ck you Logan" chants as Paul took his turn working over Jelly Roll, later decking Roll with a Knockout Punch on the outside. Jelly Roll then went crashing through the announce table courtesy of a Frog Splash from a sunglass-wearing, PRIME-drinking Logan Paul.
Medical personnel immediately rushed out to check on Jelly Roll and the heels took their time slowly working over Randy Orton, with Mr. Roll eventually shrugging off the medical team after a number of minutes to save Randy Orton and hit Lariats and a Chokeslam to Logan Paul. Roll then hit a Black Hole Slam on McIntyre before another Powerslam to Paul.
McIntyre broke up the cover and hit a Claymore to Jelly Roll. Orton then struck with an RKO out of nowhere to Drew but Orton was unable to capitalise as Logan Paul launched the Viper into the ring post.
With the match down to Logan Paul and Jelly Roll, Paul took advantage of the still-down singer with a Frog Splash for the 1-2-3.
CM Punk def. Gunther (c) - World Heavyweight Championship
After just over two and a half hours, Gunther defended the World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk in the main event of night one of SummerSlam.
The action began slowly, with both men feeling each other out in the early going. Eventually, though, Gunther hit his opponent with Chops to the hamstring, back, and chest to gain control of the contest and he proceeded to work over the challenger, including with an Abdominal Stretch.
Pink countered into an Abdominal Stretch of his own and tried for a Go To Sleep but Gunther countered into a Choke, only for Punk to roll through. Punk was unable to capitalise, though, and he walked straight into a Big Boot. Gunther continued to dominate with more Chops and Punk soon found himself hung up in the ropes, with Gunther pulling his opponent back for another Big Boot.
Gunther's simple, methodical offence combined with some taunting kept the World Heavyweight Champion in control, with Gunther being on top for over 10 minutes by the time he applied a Sharpshooter. Punk managed to reverse into a Figure Four Leglock and he rolled through into a Sharpshooter of his own, with Michael Cole reminding everyone that Gunther tapped out at WrestleMania 41. Unlike then, however, the former WALTER reached the bottom rope.
This proved to be a short Punk flurry as Gunther regained control once again, with Punk very much looking like Apollo Creed after the first round of his boxing match with Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Unlike Apollo Creed, though, CM Punk fought back and began to use the crowd for motivation, only to run straight into a Powerbomb for a near fall.
Gunther went for a Sleeper after more Chops but Punk countered with a Russian Legsweep and he followed up with a Running Knee and Bulldog for a two count. Gunther simply fired back with a Back Body Drop and Frog Splash, but Punk remained in the match by getting his shoulder up.
Out of nowhere, Punk almost hit a GTS but Gunther escaped and connected with another Powerbomb. Gunther followed up with a Shotgun Dropkick before a third Powerbomb. CM Punk kicked out again, however, causing an eruption of noise inside MetLife Stadium.
A grim spot next as Gunther placed CM Punk across the top rope and simply shoved his boot into Punk's face in a stretch. Gunther then launched Punk into the ring post with a Back Suplex and spent some time gloating on the announce table which caused Punk to recover and send Gunther bouncing off the table by pulling his leg out from under him. Gunther hid under the table and returned with blood pouring from his forehead, with the World Heavyweight Champion having done a blade job.
CM Punk quite literally smelled blood and followed up with another Running Knee and Bulldog before a Flying Elbow. A Go To Sleep attempt followed but Gunther countered into a Sleeper. Punk got back to his feet and finally hit the GTS. Gunther didn't even go down so Punk hit a second one for the win.
Seth Rollins def. CM Punk (c) - World Heavyweight Championship
As a tearful Punk celebrated, "Burn it Down" suddenly filled the arena and a Seth Rollins on crutches made his way to the ramp. Rollins teased that he was too injured, only to suddenly remove the knee brace and run to the ring.
Rollins escaped a GTS attempt and battered Punk with the briefcase. Rollins then cashed in and hit a Stomp for the win to become the new World Heavyweight Champion to end SummerSlam.
