The flag of the United States that previously flew above WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut caused disruption for local residents on Saturday when it was ripped from its pole by a storm and landed on power lines.
Eversource Energy's Kaitlyn Woods noted to Greenwich Time that around 5,000 customers in Stamford immediately lost power after the flag blew loose of WWE HQ and became tangled in power lines. Power was restored within 20 minutes to 3,000 of the affected customers.
Then, while crews were working to remove the flag on Sunday afternoon, it shifted and made contact with another power line, which caused an outage in nearby Greenwich, Connecticut, affecting 40,000 people. By early Monday morning, the power outages in Greenwich and Stamford had mostly been resolved.
Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Matt Palmer noted the flag flew off the roof of WWE HQ at 8:44 pm local time on Saturday and became lodged on high-voltage wires.
The flag had been in place since it was raised above the then-new WWE headquarters in November 2023 in honour of US Veterans Day. The glad was 76 ft wide and 40 ft tall and was one of the largest US flags in the United States.
