WWE commentator Pat McAfee is potentially set to face legal action after spreading misinformation.

On an episode of the Pat McAfee show in late February 2025, McAfee spoke on a salacious rumour involving a love triangle between a University of Mississippi student, his girlfriend, and his father, with McAfee speaking of said rumour as part of a tenuous link to NFL scouting.

Despite McAfee’s use of the word ‘allegedly’ the spreading of a rumour on such a widely viewed platform as his show has allegedly caused harm to Mary Kate Cornett - the girlfriend at the heart of the rumour. Per a report from The Athletic, Cornett’s safety online and in person was compromised as a result of the rumour being spread by outlets such as McAfee’s show, as well as social media profiles belonging to NFL personalities, and hosts from popular network Barstool Sports.

Cornett has consulted legal representatives and intends to take action against McAfee, as well as ESPN - the network that airs his show. Cornett is potentially looking at filing legal action against others who helped spread the rumour.

“I would like people to be held accountable for what they’ve done,” Cornett said. “You’re ruining my life by talking about it on your show for nothing but attention, but here I am staying up until 5 in the morning, every night, throwing up, not eating because I’m so anxious about what’s going to happen for the rest of my life.”

McAfee has not commented on the situation thus far.
