Founded in 1987, the IWGP Heavyweight Championship was soon established as one of the best titles in professional wrestling and has been held by some of the best wrestlers to ever step inside the squared circle.
The IWGP Heavyweight Title was retired in 2021 and combined with the IWGP Intercontinental Title to form the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Then, following a controversial few years, the V4 was brought back after Wrestle Kingdom 20 and the top champion in NJPW was introduced as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion once again.
